INDIGNATION MEETING AT SHANGĦAL

SHANGHAI, August 6th, Nood.

A public indignation meeting was held here last night in the “Astor Ħall under the auspices of the China Association. Mr. R. M. Campbell presided and the bullding was packed with leading residents of various nationalities, chiefly British, American, German and French.

The meeting was the largest gathering of Europeans ever held in Shanghal.

The following resolution was carried unani- mously →→

"Resolved to appeal to our respective Govern- ment for protection fi im outrage by Chinese and against the apparently inadequate manner in which the persons guilty of former outrages bave been and are being desit with."

Copies of this resolution have been telegraphed to London and Washington.

A largely attended indignation meeting was held at Foochow last night.

Absolutely no provocation whatever was given for the attack on the missionaries.

AN AMERICAN MISSION DESTROYED, The work of pillage and murder is reported to be still going on in the province of Fublien, and news has now reached here from Foochow to the effect that the American Mission house at Ingkok, near Kucheng, has been burnt,

It is not yet known whether any lives were lost at Ingkok.

SERIOUS CRISIS AT FOOCHOW.

SHANGHAI, August 6th, 5 p.m. All the Europeans resident at Foochow now find themselves in a very critical position owing to the hostile feeling openly evinced by the natives, who bave suddenly become grossly offensive and overbearing in their attitude towards foreigners.

The native officials have reported to the various foreign Consuls stationed at Foochow that should any outbreak occur they feel certain that they will be quite unable to cope with the mob, for the reason that not only the district of Kucheng (where the recent massacre of British Missionaries took place) but the whole province of Fuhkien is in a state of rebellion against the government. They state their willingness to preserve order, but aver that they can do absolutely nothing to put down a general anti- foreign stalag of the masses.

The American mission at Fungfuk has been burnt and the occupants escaped massacre only through evacuating their homes shortly belor: the "Crusaders" delivered the attack.

The whole of the European and American residents of Foochow have appealed to their respective High Authorities in the Far East for protection and have asserted in their telegrams that gunboats should be at once sent right up to

Foochow, anchor off the Settlement, and clear for action.

The extremely critical position of many mis. Hobarles now resident at various inland cities causes great anxiety to the foreign residents of Foocho, and it is generally conceded that drastic measures must at once be adopted by the various foreign Governments concerned to put a stop to further dastardly outrages upon foreigners.

Sir Nicholas O'Conor has telegraphed to the Chairman of the Shanghal branch of the China Association, in reply to his communication respecting the resolution carried at the indigna. tion meeting last night, that he has directed "Mr. Mansfield, British Consul at Foochow, to proceed Immediately, under military escort, to Kucheng, there hold an enquiry into the massacres, and then promptly report to Peking.

The Emperor of China is very angry about the Kucheng massacres and has issued a decree ordaining immediate capital punishment for alli persons found guilty.

The massacres were the work of members of a secret society known as the "Vegetarian" party or sect, and the attacking party consisted of men armed with spears and swords. They appeared well organized and were under one leader.

The missionaries had no suspicion of an attack. The whole affair was sudden and most terrible and the butchery was over in half an hout.

The missionaries begged and beseeched the blood-thirsty ruffians to spare their lives, and went so far as to offer to surrender their property and their valuables if allowed to leave the dis- trict in peace. Some of the brutal gang were moved to compassion by the mother, who, with pale face and tears in her eyes, sought to protect ber children from the ferocity of the savage assassins. She appealed in vain however, for the leader of the mob replied to all appeals for clemency by saying to his orgel crew" you know your orderi { kill outright,”

The scenes were, according to the survivorą, Awful, heartrending, and indescribably diabolical. CHINESE TROOPS LOOT THE

SHANGHAI.

SHANGHAI, August 8th. The troops sent by the Viceroy of Fubklen province to quell the disturbances at Kucheng and protect the property of the missionaries have looted the victims' houses, ransack d their boxes and wardrobes and appropriated everything belonging to the murdered missionaries.

Great indignation is expressed at Foochow and Shanghai in respect to these latest outrages by the troops of the Viceroy, and it is urged that the British Government must take action, the Chinese troops and officials being wholly untrustworthy,

Two of the little children who were severely wounded at Kucheng are now dying!
